We spoke with Stephen Scholten, VP of Product at adidas Running, Trail & Hike, to find out more about their newest addition to the beloved Freehiker line

VALŪS: What was the inspiration behind the refreshed Freehiker 3s?
SCHOLTEN: Our ambition with the Freehiker 3 was to double down on what made this franchise iconic from the start, which is exceptional comfort for long days on rolling terrain. With this update, we really looked at how we could evolve that foundation while keeping the shoe true to its original purpose. The result is a lighter, more refined build that still delivers the stability hikers rely on without sacrificing comfort, but feels more effortless over longer wear.

VALŪS: How does the Adidas design team balance utility and design for the Freehiker, a shoe made to carry you from Runyon Canyon to dinner in WeHo and repeat the next day?
SCHOLTEN: For us, it always starts with function on the trail. Once we have that foundation right, we look at how we can enhance performance. With Freehiker 3, we reduced weight and refined the silhouette while maintaining stability and support. The integration of our Hyperboost Pro midsole, inspired by our running innovations, is key here. It brings a new level of cushioning and energy return that allows the shoe to move more seamlessly between environments and provide great comfort.

VALŪS: What Adidas garments would you suggest pairing with the Freehikers? For the trail as well as for a night out.
SCHOLTEN: On the trail, I would pair them with technical, weather-ready pieces from adidas TERREX that prioritize movement and protection, lightweight shells, performance layers, and utility driven shorts or pants that can handle changing terrain. For a night out, I think it works best when the shoe is grounded in a more minimal, technical lifestyle look, clean tracksuits, elevated outerwear, or layered monochrome pieces that keep the focus on the silhouette while still feeling refined.

You can grab your own pair of Freehiker 3s at adidas boutiques and department stores worlwide, as well as at adidas.com.
